Why We Ride star Dave Barr is an inspiration to many. He is an author, inspirational speaker and U.S. Veteran. He is best known for being the first double amputee to circumnavigate the globe on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. His books, Riding the Edge and Riding the Ice, chronicle his exciting motorcycle adventures. Dave was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2000.
He joined the U.S. Marine Corps when he was 17. Then, in 1981, while riding a military vehicle, his vehicle drove over a land mine, resulting in an explosion that cost him both of his legs. His disability, however, did not stop him from living an amazing life and going on epic journeys on his motorcycle.
In a 2003 interview, he said “If you’re not willing to take risks, you’re going nowhere. I took [the disabilities] and used them to give my life meaning so that maybe someday someone will be able to say, ‘I met Dave Barr and if he did all of these things as he is, then surely I can live my life normally.’”
